CITY CHAT – Mick Rock – pt. 1
While working for Space 404 last fall, I produced and edited four episodes of CITY CHAT. It was a fun project to work on, even though one rainy afternoon we were detained by Homeland Security – but that ’s a story for another day. The episodes are now finally coming online and above is the beginning of a two-part interview with rock and fashion photographer Mick Rock. The second two parter involves the very lovely fashion designer Cynthia Rowley. The series is directed by my longtime colleague Christian Dinh, and hosting duties belong to Yue Xu. Enjoy.

WHY I’M A PRETENTIOUS PRAT WHEN IT COMES TO ÉRIC ROHMER FILMS
If a picture truly paints a thousand words then the image above is a cinematic encyclopedia. It’s from the film “Claire’s Knee” (1970), part of Eric Rohmer’s series of the Six Moral Tales. Here we see a young girl, vacationing in La Côte, about to discover the power of her sensuality. You may not laugh out loud or sob uncontrollably at this understated masterpiece, but you will feel the sun in your face and red wine trickling down your throat as you extend your hand to pluck a peach off the garden’s tree. This experience will repeat itself each time you watch one of Rohmer’s laid back summer day films. And employing master cinematographer Nestor Almendros, a man who went on to shoot an entire film at magic hour, doesn’t hurt.
Rohmer’s earlier work, shot in black & white á la guerilla, take you through the rainy streets of 1960’s Paris. Just picture yourself at the corner café, sipping an espresso, as the ink from Le Figaro stains your fingers. You will spend the day hanging out with Jean-Louis, Jean-Claude, or Bertrand, listening to their passionate trysts with girls they picked up at the boulangerie. I mean, what else is a frenchman to do, no?
Here is a little treat. A scene from the first of the “moral tales”, the short film titled “The girl from the Monceau bakery.” For those filmmakers who want to take a crack at mumblecore, this is your master class. Enjoy!

SHORT FILMS REEL
This is the reel for SHORT FILMS I’ve written, produced, directed, and edited… all in that order. We were very lucky to have our short films selected to film festivals all over the world, from South America to Asia. But since I personally won’t be making short films ever again (yes, this time I meant it), I thought it was time to put together a quick 4 minute retrospective. If you want to view the entire canon, follow this SHORT FILMS link. Enjoy!
